The Author:

I’m Max Nichols, a game designer. I love the Legend of Zelda series, cats, delving into player psychology, and talking. Sharing my thoughts is one of my favorite things, especially if my audience gets something out of it.

The Blog:

“The Nameless Quality” is the 83rd Lens from Jesse Schell’s The Art of Game Design: The Book of Lenses, an excellent book on game design. It is a powerful lens because it embraces the idea that there are wondrous qualities in the best game experiences that are difficult to define, and come about only through the organic interweaving and coming together of all the games’ pieces. No matter how much we learn, there’s always more to discover.

The Art:

The background art is a tiny portion of an enormous map illustrated by Monica Helms, as part of a cooperative storytelling game that I was designing at the time.
